Polemics in Rio’s Carnival 2012

It is running towards Carnival 2012. São Paulo starts Friday next, while Rio will have its parades from Sunday onwards. In several towns carnival has already started. Pernambuco (Recife) and Bahia (Salvador) always start before anybody else is even thinking about carnival.

But it’s still pre-carnival time, so let’s have a look at some difficulties samba school Vila Isabel encountered.

The recently elected Miss Universe demanded USD 50,000 and is kicked out by samba school Vila Isabel in Rio de Janeiro.
The president of the association got angry and annulled the invitation to the Angolan Leila Lopes to take part in the carnival parade of Vila Isabel, which will honour her country, with the theme “Você semba lá…que eu sambo cá! O canto livre de Angola”.

Leila would have asked first class airfare, accommodation in a five-star hotel, two security guards to accompany her full-time and an exclusive cabin in the Marquês de Sapucaí during the show. Moreover, she also demanded a fifty thousand USdollars cash payment.
The invitation to participate in the carnival parade came from the singer Martinho of Vila Isabel, the originator of the plot in honour of Angola. All Leila’s requirements were passed to the singer, who also holds the position of honorary president of the samba school.

The president of Vila Isabel, Wilsinho Alves, chafed at so many demands and cancelled the invitation. “Here we parade only out of love. We do not charge or receive money. All costumes to the school are donated by the community. With fifty thousand USdollars we finance an entire parade. We don’t want this miss in our parade anymore”, he said.

Vila Isabel is the last school in the carnival parade on Sunday, with the plot prepared by carnivalesque Rosa Magalhães.

But no problem at all. Vila Isabel has a beautiful replacement.
